The arrival of the Pied-Cuckoo Mount Abu

This year the Pied-Cuckoo has arrived late, last year I had spotted it on the 2nd of July, this year it has been spotted on the 15th July 2010. I had been on the look for this harbinger of the monsoons from mid-June. I went in search of it with my camera on the 16, but only heard its marvelous call from a valley not accessible by road. Now that they have arrived in Abu I’ll be posting some snaps of these and other birds that head this way during the start of the monsoons.
According to folklore these bird are the harbingers of the monsoon season, they are supposed to arrive a week or 10 days before the actual monsoons starts at a particular place. So far our Monsoons have not started there has been a build up almost every day of heavy clouds which by evening mysteriously disappear. Yesterday the bunyas had a “Havan” that is they light their sacred fire pour kilos of Ghee over the fire to appease the Rain Gods!! Probably the ghee was adulterated like most of the stuff in this country hence the gods were not too happy!! The rains did not break. Wonder if they did the gig or rain dance on their day out in the forest like the Indian’s of America it might have had a positive effect. Only hope the arrival of the Pied-Cuckoo, all the way from Africa will usher in the much needed rain that has been playing peek-a-boo with this small hill station of ours for the last fortnight.

Here to the Cuckoo Cheers! “let it rain” “let it rain” “Let it Rain”
