Today I hit the jackpot, a very senior and fit ex-Marian, has just sent me two lovely black and white snaps of the famous Nun Rock. These authentic snaps have survived the passage of time. Bob Amore sent them to me. Thanks, Bob, this is what Bob had to say.

I've a few old black and white snaps were taken circa 1953 to 1957 and they should be attached.

Nun Rock and Nun Rock 2... 1954 just shows the top of the rock, lower parts covered by bushes and trees. Also, shows the tennis courts.

While surfing a few days ago, I stumbled upon this unique painting of the Nun Rock, Mount Abu. Its uniqueness immediately caught my attention. I had heard of this rock and assumed it existed in the convent's vicinity, hence named NUN Rock. I thought I knew Abu like the back of my hand; how had I missed this remarkable structure of nature is beyond me? My query from the wise old sages of Abu regarding this legendary rock seemed like a tale set in time. They told me it was a rock shaped like a nun holding a child in its arms overlooking the tennis court that belonged to the Rajputana Club of Abu. I was also told that heavy undergrowth covered this rock. One elderly Rajput gentleman told me that the very shape of the rock had changed through lightning in 1994; a gigantic bolt of lightning struck this rock, splitting it into two.

They did this painting when the Rajputana Club experienced its hay days under the British administration. This beauty of nature, as depicted in the painting and its fascinating tale, sent me scampering to the site. I felt like a pricked balloon when I beheld the sight that greeted me. The tennis court was in shambles. At first, I could not figure out where this marvel of nature was. On scrutinizing the surrounding I discovered it behind a huge Peepal tree.

The painting reflects the passage of time and of memories of an era long gone. Rajputana Club was an exclusive club catering to the British, the Maharajas, and Rajas of Abu. The average person was not entertained here. The club was the chief hub of entertainment. They well equipped it with an assortment of all that pertained to the elite. Card tables, billiards, badminton courts and squash courts catered to their needs.

The Rajputana Club of Abu then. They have converted the club into a hotel.

Hanuman Jayanti the literal meaning of this is :- The Monkey God "possessing victory”
Today Hanuman Jayanti is celabrated all over India with pomp and show.People in India worship Hanuman. On Saturdays and Tuesdays they keep a fast in reverence to this mighty and powerful god. The Hanuman भक्ट (disciple) is a staunch follower and disciplined individual. Hanuman the ब्रहमाचारी Brahmachari (puritan) led an austere life in the service of Lord Ram. Today those who follow in his footsteps are called ब्रहमाचारी .These चेला (followers) of his abstain from having any relationship with women. Amen

Mount Abu Vasundhara Raje Scindia

Vasundhara Raje Scindia is synonymous with Rajasthan she’s now an integral part of the princely state of Rajasthan; born into the royal family of the Scindia’s it’s befitting that she is the Chief Minister of this austere state of her forefathers’. Her sudden and unpredicted visit caught the authorities with their guard down. Abu overnight was given a tremendous face lift, potholes in the road disappeared, the surrounding areas were spick and span there was a flurry of activity all over, trees bases were whitewashed the roadside demarked with white and pink chunna enhancing the whole countryside.
The army had prepared the helipad at their base, she arrived just before the finals of the Maharao Sirohi Pole Match. Her motorcade to the Trevor pavilion was marked with pomp and show by her co party workers the BJP. She did not waste any time, without much flair and ado she flagged of the polo match.
The crowning glory was her speech to the Abuites. In her speech she dispelled all doubts that had given this place a graven look. The embargo on the sale and purchase of land in Mount Abu that had been placed by the Rajasthan Government was finally lifted, and the exclusion of the town of Mount Abu from under the sanctuary umbrella sent cheer of applauds throughout the audience it’s vibrations were also reflected in the state of Gujarat, as many Guajarati’s own land in Abu. What cheered me most was her wonderful decision to see that the Nakki lake was given immediate attention also her wise decisions declared in today’s राजस्थान पत्रिका.

Mount Abu "Maharao Sirohi Polo Cup"

Mayo College Polo Team Trounced by Umed Bhavan Palace Polo Team.
Many years ago in Scotland, a new game was invented. They ruled it 'Gentlemen Only...Ladies Forbidden'...and thus the word GOLF entered into the English language.

Today April 17, 2008, the Chief Minister of Rajasthan Vasundhara Raje Scindia graced the Final of the "Maharao Sirohi Polo Cup” at the Trevor Oval. After the introduction to the teams she flagged off the game by tossing the ball amid the anxious players, by the time she walked back to the pavilion the game was well underway. The crowd cheered in unison as soon as they scored the first goal. The spectators were really supportive, they showed a keen interest in the game and applauded the dexterous horse riders. The game went smoothly and the young horsemen did not disappoint the audience.
The coveted trophy was lifted by the Umed Bhavan Palace polo team; they trounced their rival team, the Mayo College Team by six goals to three. Three Cheers to the Ajmer Boys Mayo team for their fine display and sportsmanship. I wish them luck in their next challenge polo-cup match.

Mount Abu - "Paris in Abu"

Whose idea was it to put up the mini (I presume it’s the replica of the) Eiffel tower. What significant role does it play regarding Abu? The tower was built by Eiffel to celebrate the Centennial of the Revolution of 1789. France has always been the leading nation for revolution, new ideas the Renaissance of the western world. Yea it sure symbolizes France and is a huge tourist attraction there, but here?? Well I’m sure it would appease the French tourists visiting here or would it? Believe me they are real sticklers for perfection, I know I was there, open your mouth and speak to them in English in their own country they’ll ignore you like the plague. I’m sure the authorities could have come up with more innovative and brilliant ideas to represent this unique place of ours. Any way what can we Abuites say! The denoting party probably had a lot of spare material lying around and hence the birth and construction of the mini Eiffel tower came into effect. I’ve just taken a few snaps of the Paris that is being constructed on the main gateway to the Abu town. Will keep you posted as developments progress.
Today Abu is gearing up for the finals of the polo match being played on the Trevor’s Oval. The Two finalists playing today are the team from Umaid Bhavan palace and Mayo College boys. The closing ceremony will be graced by the chief minister Vasundhara Raje Scindia.

Today, the team from Mayo College Ajmer played against the Abu team for the coveted Maharao Sirohi Polo Trophy. I watched the match till the time both teams had scored a goal Tourists and the public were all there to witness the match. The area around polo Grounds was humming with clusters of people from all walks of life. The periphery around the ground was crowded; throngs of tourists and residents were all over the place. They did not spare even trees and rooftops. The army band “The Sikh Regiment” with their special Bagpiper squad in their colourful attire was there to support the polo players.

My hats off to the organizing committee. They have done a superb job of pulling off this third anniversary for the revival of polo in Abu.

Mount Abu  Sandstorm, Hailstones & freezing rain

The sandstorm caught all Abuites off guard; it originated from the West at around 2:30 p.m. It reminded me of the setting of some horror movie. The powerful wind and the flying debris of leaves and litter heralded in the sandstorm on Friday, the 4th of April. The sky took on an orange hue and one could see the colossal dust cloud approaching; within minutes, the place gradually darkened. It looked like the end of the world was near. I ran out with my camera and with my back to the sandstorm took a small video of the eastern horizon, as can be seen from the video, the light filtering in between the valley soon got gradually extinguished as the dust engulfed everything in its path.
At the peak of the storm it began to thunder, there was lightning and then the heavens opened up and showered the place with hailstones. This was followed by freezing rain and a drastic fall in the temperature. Abu does have its share of sandstorms once in a way but this was exceptional. I wonder if this is the harbinger of global warming.

Travel back in time with an old postcard that reveals the Pavilion's everlasting splendour. This historical gem, once known as Trevor's Oval, was a tribute to polo's grandeur, mirroring the history of colonial days. The grounds, filled with history, saw the best horses and showcased the talents of past Maharajas and the British elite.

The ghosts of the past persisted until 1932, when the fierce game of polo came to an abrupt halt, leaving an unexplained hole that history has yet to fill. My own memories from the early 1960s, on the other hand, provide a vivid image. As a young observer, I was awestruck by the passing out March parade of Indian Police Service cadets. The flawless horse manoeuvres and incredible horse-riding prowess never failed to fascinate those in attendance.

The horsemen's peg-sticking prowess was nothing short of incredible, displaying an unrivalled mix of agility and precision. The distinguished presence of Presidents and Vice Presidents as respected Chief Guests enhanced the ambience of this sacred land.

However, with the move of the Training Academy, the previously immaculately maintained grounds began to deteriorate. Rainwater caused areas of soggy soil, changing the once-holy ground into an overgrown, dismal expanse.

They repurposed the site for the summer festival in an effort to revitalise its role. Tents dotted the immaculate field, housing stores and makeshift amusement parks. The Air Force, as if mirroring the winds of change, now uses the site for helicopter landings, a dramatic shift from its polo-filled past.

However, a ray of optimism appears on the horizon. With the start of the "Maharao Sirohi Polo Cup" on April 10, 2008, there was a wave of thankfulness among Abu residents. This event commemorates the return of polo, paying homage to the Polo Oval's past and legacy. As Abuites, we extend a warm welcome to all guests, encouraging them to join us in the delightful spectacle of the upcoming matches.

With its rich history and renewed energy, the Pavilion serves as a tribute to the enduring heritage of the past and the optimistic resuscitation of a beloved athletic institution.

Mount Abu" The Doggy Show That Went Down"

I was really excited when I was told by a very dear friend a dog show was going to be on the agenda this year in the first week of May. His Highness of Sirohi was sponsoring the dog show and my friend Thakur Devi Singh of Bera was going to be one of the chief judges to judge and handle the show. Imagine my disappointment today Mr Singh phoned and told me that the dog show had been called off because there were not enough entries. I jokingly told him why he did not send out an invitation to my brother-in-law, the man with more dogs than any other here in Abu. My B.C as I fondly call him has five pedigree dogs in his house and eleven mongrels living in his compound in tote he has around fifteen dogs, once upon a time he had over seventeen pie dogs, and these numbers gradually dwindled as the strays became prey to the world’s greatest predators the panther.
The few of us who own dogs here in Abu was looking forward to this event as it would give Abu publicity and it’s a lovely place for a dog show. My Basset Hound, who was vehicle shy today, waits patiently every morning for her jaunt to St.Mary’s High school and back. I still haven’t given up! Who knows, maybe October is a wonderful month for a dog show as at this time of the year a throng of tourists overran Abu.
