A local Abuite is on his way to Baba Ramdev's shrine.

Today while I was out birding I saw a few guys on bicycles. This aroused my curiosity, and I flagged one of them and asked him where he was going. He introduced himself as Shanti Lal. He and 5 others from Delaware Mount Abu were travelling 460 km to attend the Ramdevra Fair and pay homage to the saint at Ramdev Temple in Rajasthan. The temple is located 13 km from Pokhran on the Jodhpur-Jaisalmer road. Aba Ramdev’s followers regard him as the incarnation of Lord Krishna, while Muslims venerate him as Ramshah Pir. His followers are from Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. Millions of his followers take this annual pilgrimage from Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, and other parts of India.
Ramdev Jayanti is a public holiday in the Indian state of Rajasthan. The major celebration of Ramdev Jayanti takes place at the temple dedicated to him.

Post-monsoon blues Mt.Abu

Post-monsoon blues Mt.Abu

Another bad year would have been impossible to manage. Thankfully the rain gods have been kind to this oasis in the Rajasthan desert. Abuites have heaved a huge sigh of relief and are now back to their wanton way of life. One would have thought the hardships endured by the drought-like condition would have conditioned the people at large to take the uttermost precaution of conserving the precious water and utilizing it to their maximum benefit, but that’s not the case, everywhere I look I see tanks overflowing, taps open with not a care in the world to see that it should be shut to preserve the liquid gold that is being wasted to the streets and gutters.

The monsoons this year have opened up a multitude of potholes that were previously patched up. Since the Municipality has not done much about the situation, local Abuites should put up some temporary placard, so that people should just be aware of them. I have seen young tourists on hired bikes hitting some of these life-threatening potholes and ending up pretty badly injured.  The local Abuites and I included have to drive through this obstacle course of potholes many times a day, and all the while bitching and cursing like the Greeks. Now pray tell me how do the Greeks curse- well imagine yourself a Greek and a small mishap befalls you, what do you do, you raise your hands to the heavens, and curse the gods in the filthiest language or languages you know that have caused the mishap, and in this case the bloody potholes.

Tourists visiting India at this time of the year and especially this part of the country do be sure to take precautions against Dengue fever and malaria. Another nasty post-monsoon illness is viral fever and the painful eye flue. Another precaution for those suffering from asthma is to avoid the Congress grass that has sprung up all over this Abode.

Gosh enough of lamenting on post-monsoon blues, have a look at beautiful green Abu.

Monsoon Update Mount Abu

Monsoon Update Mount Abu

Blue Mountains

The Aravalli range Mt.Abu Domain

Yesterday while returning from Sirohi, these superb sights caused me to stop and take pictures. The Blue Mountains as they are fondly called are actually the Great Aravalli Range running roughly about 485 Kilometers from Northeast to Southwest across the Rajasthan state.  Looks like Mount Abu is being drenched for maybe the last time this season, the monsoons in this area have dwindled off completely over the last few weeks, Abu is still high and dry and in desperate need of rain, our dams and reservoirs are in desperate want. We Abuites have faced drought conditions before but we do not want a repeat performance by Mother Nature as only we know the inconvenience we have to put up with.

Mount Abu "Maharao Sirohi Polo Cup"

Mayo College Polo Team Trounced by Umed Bhavan Palace Polo Team.
Many years ago in Scotland, a new game was invented. They ruled it 'Gentlemen Only...Ladies Forbidden'...and thus the word GOLF entered into the English language.

Today April 17, 2008, the Chief Minister of Rajasthan Vasundhara Raje Scindia graced the Final of the "Maharao Sirohi Polo Cup” at the Trevor Oval. After the introduction to the teams she flagged off the game by tossing the ball amid the anxious players, by the time she walked back to the pavilion the game was well underway. The crowd cheered in unison as soon as they scored the first goal. The spectators were really supportive, they showed a keen interest in the game and applauded the dexterous horse riders. The game went smoothly and the young horsemen did not disappoint the audience.
The coveted trophy was lifted by the Umed Bhavan Palace polo team; they trounced their rival team, the Mayo College Team by six goals to three. Three Cheers to the Ajmer Boys Mayo team for their fine display and sportsmanship. I wish them luck in their next challenge polo-cup match.
