St. Mary’s Abu: October Days & Changing Traditions
October in St. Mary’s School, Mount Abu, has always been a season to look forward to—a time when the old and the new meet on familiar grounds. The echo of applause from the concert stage, the hum of conversation between old friends, and the quiet pride of boys taking part in time-honoured traditions.
This year, however, brings with it a subtle change.
For the first time in the school’s history, the traditional Sports will not accompany the Annual Concert Day. The school held the sports earlier in the year, on April 1st, 2010, departing from the usual October routine. It may feel a little different, perhaps even strange for those who remember the full spectacle—but St. Mary’s has always had a way of keeping its spirit alive, no matter the format.
That spirit will be very evident in the coming days.
Programme of Events
15th October 2010
Concert for the schoolboys—always the opening note to the celebrations.
16th October 2010
Concert for Sophians, day scholars’ parents, and ex-students—a gathering that blends generations.
17th October 2010
A day of both reverence and revelry.
The Holy Communion Mass, where five boys will receive their First Communion, marks a deeply significant milestone in their lives.
Later, the school grounds will come alive with the much-loved school fete.
There is word that the 1984 batch will be out in full strength, along with members of the 1980 batch—a reminder that no matter how far one travels, St. Mary’s always calls you back.
18th October 2010
Concert for parents of boarders and ex-students—another evening of shared pride and celebration.
19th & 20th October 2010
Holidays—time for the dust to settle, and for memories to linger just a little longer.
The spirit of St. Mary’s Abu hasn’t changed, even though Sports Day is no longer a tradition. These are the days when corridors fill with stories, the grounds echo with laughter, and the past walks alongside the present.
For those returning, it is a homecoming.
For those still in school, it is another chapter in a story that never ends.
